China’s Moonshot unveils new open source AI model to rival US frontier offerings By Investing.com

Investing.com– Chinese artificial intelligence startup Moonshot on Friday unveiled a new model– Kimi K3– which it said is the world’s largest open source AI model with performance close to that of leading frontier models.

The company said in a statement that Kimi K3 is a 2.8-trillion parameter model with 1 million token context and inherent multi-modal capabilities.

The model performed close to Anthropic’s Fable 5 and substantially outperformed OpenAI’s GPT 5.6 Sol and GPT 5.5 in certain benchmarks, Moonshot said.

Separately, Arena.AI said Kimi-K3 was ranked first in a frontend coding benchmark, ahead of Claude Fable 5, which was the previous leader.

Kimi K3’s release underscored a growing push among Chinese AI companies to rival their U.S. counterparts, with their offerings seen steadily catching up, and in some cases even surpassing American frontier models.

Moonshot is backed by tech giants including Alibaba and Tencent, and was seen steadily ramping up development efforts this year. Bloomberg reported last month that the startup was seeking to raise $2 billion at a valuation of about $30 billion, with a Hong Kong listing also on the cards.

Kimi K3’s release was preceded by models from Zhipu and DeepSeek in recent months, which were also seen performing closely to U.S. frontier offerings. The new models, many of which were open-source, come amid a broader push by Beijing to ramp up promote local AI development and chips.
